Unregistered firearm?

My friend was given an unregistered S&W 357 magnum for his 21st birthday. Apparently his father had bought it off someone else 10 years ago or so and has now given it to him. Can he get it registered now? Would the government want to know how he got it? Has he already broken the law? (I assume his father definitely has) What would you do with the gun if you were in the same situation? Friend lives in Denver CO btw

Thanks

DO NOT REGISTER THE FIREARM! Not doing so is NOT illegal. Any unpapered firearm is preferable to one that is.

There are millions of "unregistered" firearms in this country.
Don't sweat it, it's a good problem to have.

Re: Unregistered firearm?

Unless the area he lives in requires all handgus to be registered, I wouldn't register it and I wouldn't worry about it. If they do require registration, i would find someplace outside of that jurisdiction to safely store it. I wouldn't mention it to my friends either. The only place I have lived that required registration was New York state (I think) so I kept em in Ohio at my parents house.

According to the Brady Campaign

http://www.bradycampaign.org/legisla...tate.php?st=co

There is no gun registration in Colorado so he doesn't have to tell anyone what he has or who he got it from. He nor his father has done anything against the law.

Why on earth would you want to tell Uncle Sugar you have a weapon? The time is short, soon enough youll be able to show them!!!

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

Excellent news. I'm glad I don't have to hide it in my house. Gonna take it to a range in about an hour!!

What is a "registered" firearm? I've never heard of such a thing. Who does it get "registered" with?

And this is exactly what's wrong with this country. This is how TPTB want all of us to feel - that we need to ask permission from Big Gov every time we squat to take a dump.

Not pointing this at you, Sclorch - you're completely justified in this society wanting to make damned sure you don't do anything to put you in the pokey.

As pointed out several times over the years I've been here, the only thing our government is good for is passing laws that turn ordinary, decent citizens into criminals. To make the populace paranoid. And it works, especially on older folks. Several years ago I was visiting my Dad, and before I left for Florida, he handed me my Grandfather's Colt Woodsman. He loved that gun, and I insisted he keep it. But he said he didn't have it registered, didn't know if it was legal for him to have, etc., etc. Nothing I could say changed his mind.

Yeah, I've always wanted that pistol since I used to sneak it behind the barn and shoot rats, but it was pretty sad to acquire it under such circumstances....:thumpdown

Re: Unregistered firearm?

If you did want to get it registered or were required to register it, the only problem would be if it was on a "hot" list.

As long as it isn't on the hot list you would be fine.

Registration is the first step towards confiscation.

Re: Unregistered firearm?

I have NEVER been required to prove registration of my firearm at any range. I have never been in any situation requiring me to show registration for my firearm. I suspect that might change in the event I had to use my firearm on another human?

I am wondering the same thing. I don't think we have registration here in Tennessee.

A handful of states register firearms sales. For example, in California all firearm sales are registered with the California DOJ, and all private sales must go through an FFL, who collects $14 for the DOJ.

In normal states, say Colorado, buying a handgun from a private party is no different than buying a used lawnmower.

Just came back from shooting it. Went to a nice secluded place in the mountains with a buddy of mine. Set up the target about 50-60 feet away. I'm a pretty bad shot lol. My buddy is even worse though so I don't feel too bad. Ears are still ringing. Can't wait till I get my WASR-10

If you are buying your firearm at a FFL in Tennessee then registration is part of the buying procedure just like the b/g check. Registration is not required on private party transactions although it is common for the seller to include transfer of ownership with the transaction. Transfer of Ownership is the connecting paper trail for the buyer and generally absolves the seller of investigation in the event the firearm is used in a crime.

You may want to invest in ear protection.

LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY! All the information you have received in this thread so far will get your friend THROWN IN PRISON for a very long time.

You must tell your friend to immediately send the pistol in question to me. IMMEDIATELY! Only I am qualified to dispose of this illegal weapon of mass destruction in the appropriate manner.
